Thirty years is a remarkable milestone in any career, especially in an industry that has changed as dramatically as international shipping and logistics.
This year, we are celebrating 30 years of Paul at KMB Shipping – three decades of dedication, leadership, resilience and, as Paul would say, making sure there’s plenty of fun along the way.
From school leaver to company director
Paul joined the business in 1996 straight from school as a trainee shipping clerk. Back then, KMB Shipping and Daily Irish Services operated as two separate businesses, working from a modest portacabin. “I remember my first day well,” Paul recalls. “Dad dropped me off on his way to work. I had my smartest trousers on with a shirt and tie.”
Looking back over the last 30 years, Paul can sum up each decade in just one word:
First 10 years: Learning
Second 10 years: Fun
Third 10 years: Stressful
How much the industry has changed
The logistics industry of 1996 looks very different to the one we know today.
“When I first started, we’d just got a new fax machine to replace something called a telex machine,” Paul laughs. “At the time it felt revolutionary, but looking back it was incredibly slow. In some ways, I wish life still moved at that pace.”
Today, instant communication, real-time tracking and digital systems have transformed the way freight moves around the world. Yet while technology has accelerated everything, Paul believes one thing remains constant: the importance of relationships and getting the details right. One innovation that made a huge difference? Email. “Younger people will laugh, but handwriting faxes all day was hard work!”
Navigating the biggest industry changes
When asked about the single biggest shift in customer expectations, Paul’s answer comes immediately.
“Brexit.”
Leaving the European Customs Union fundamentally changed international shipping.
“It all became about paperwork. There was a lot of hand-holding for customers in those first few years, with very little guidance available. We had to help businesses navigate an entirely new way of trading.”
Supporting customers through uncertainty is something KMB Shipping has always taken pride in, and Brexit was no exception.
Challenges that shaped the business
Every successful business experiences defining moments. For KMB Shipping, one of the most significant came in 2004, when tragedy struck following the death of Nick, the owner’s son, in a motorcycle accident.
“It was an incredibly difficult time for everyone,” Paul says. “There was a lot to learn, and much of it happened on the job as we navigated the future of both businesses.”
Those experiences helped shape the leadership team and laid the foundations for the company KMB Shipping has become today.
What has never changed
Despite three decades of technological advances, economic challenges and industry transformation, Paul believes the heart of KMB Shipping remains exactly the same. “Our culture and ethos. We eat, sleep and breathe it. We take everything personally because we genuinely care about our customers and their shipments. That does bring constant worry sometimes, but that’s just who we are.”
That commitment to customer service continues to define KMB Shipping today.
Milestones to be proud of
Among Paul’s proudest achievements are two standout moments. The first was completing the management buyout alongside his fellow directors, securing the future of the business. The second was leading KMB Shipping to achieve the prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise. “There’s no higher accolade a business can achieve.”
(Although, Paul insists beating Jamie at ten-pin bowling deserves an honourable mention too!)
Advice for the next generation
After 30 years in logistics, Paul’s advice to anyone starting their career is refreshingly simple. “Work for a great leader, not just a boss.”
“Be a sponge. Listen, learn and ask questions from day one. Always ask why something is done a certain way because you never know—you might discover a better way of doing it.”
Looking ahead
When asked if there was anything else he’d like to add; “I’d just like to thank all the amazing staff, customers and suppliers I’ve met over the years. I’ve made some truly great friends for life.”
“And above all, have as much fun as you can along the way.”
After 30 years, Paul’s journey reflects everything KMB Shipping stands for: expertise built through experience, genuine relationships, resilience during challenging times and a commitment to always putting customers first.
Congratulations, Paul, on an incredible 30 years!
